How We Built a Manufacturer's Website in 3 Days for Under $2,000

A 50 year old custom machine shop was invisible to AI search. We rebuilt them to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews.

The Problem

Our client is a family owned custom machinery shop in Northern Ohio, in business for more than 50 years. They design and fabricate industrial equipment for food processing, packaging, and specialty manufacturers across three states. (We have anonymized the client name in this public case study.)

Their decade old site read like a brochure. We tested it against ChatGPT and Perplexity, and neither AI assistant could find or cite them when prospects asked about custom fabricators in their region. Their previous quote from a conventional industrial marketing agency was in the high four figures and would have taken six weeks.

Scope

What We Built

Ten public pages, one dedicated product page, and a private admin portal. Every public page is server rendered HTML so AI crawlers can read it without executing JavaScript.

Home

Hero, capability summary, primary CTAs.

About

50 year company story and engineering team.

Services

Custom design, fabrication, and machining.

Industries Served

Food processing, packaging, specialty manufacturing.

Project Gallery

Photo grid of fabricated equipment.

Equipment List

In house mills, lathes, welders, and capacity.

Careers

Open roles and apprenticeship pathway.

FAQ

20 questions in semantic HTML accordion.

Get a Quote

Lead form with project specs and timeline.

Featured Product

Plus a private admin portal

Password protected, excluded from the sitemap, and blocked in robots.txt. The shop runs day to day operations behind it, completely separate from the public site.

How It Happened

The 3 Day Timeline

  1. 1
    Day 1

    Discovery and Architecture

90 minute on site session with the owner and lead engineer. AI assisted competitor research across a dozen Midwest fabrication shops. Eleven page architecture mapped and approved by end of day.

  2. 2
    Day 2

    Content and Build

AI drafted every page in about seven hours from the interview audio and project files. Engineer review on a same day video call. Built on a modern AI friendly framework that ships fully rendered HTML on every page (critical because AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript). Hundreds of phone photos enhanced with AI for consistent lighting and placed with descriptive alt text.

  3. 3
    Day 3

    AEO, Local SEO, and Launch

Every page got unique title and meta description tags, canonical links, Open Graph and Twitter Card tags. Sitewide JSON-LD: ManufacturingBusiness schema with full NAP, geo coordinates, hours, founding date, service area, and aggregate rating. WebSite schema with SearchAction. FAQPage schema covering 20 questions. Added llms.txt, robots.txt, an auto generated sitemap, semantic h1/h2/h3 hierarchy, and a native HTML accordion FAQ. Built and verified a Google Business Profile aligned to the new site, then pushed live.

We Stay After Launch

Launching a site is the starting line, not the finish line. We monitor AI citation behavior across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. We watch GBP performance in local results. We refine FAQ content based on what prospects are actually asking. We update structured data as the business evolves.

AI search is not static. A site that gets cited today can fade in months if no one is paying attention.

Why This Matters For Your Business

Two things changed in the last 18 months. AI tools matured to the point of producing professional output when directed by experienced operators. Generic AI content reads like generic AI content. Properly directed AI content reads like an engineer wrote it.

Search itself changed too. Procurement teams ask AI assistants for vendor recommendations instead of paging through directories. If your site is not built to be cited, you are invisible to a growing share of qualified buyers.

Frequently Asked

How long does an AI optimized website take to build?
An AI optimized website can be built in as little as three days when an experienced operator directs the AI tooling. The manufacturer site featured in this case study (eleven public pages plus an admin portal) was discovered, written, designed, and launched with full schema markup and Google Business Profile setup in a 72 hour window. Traditional agency timelines for the same scope run six to eight weeks because content, design, and technical SEO are handled sequentially by separate teams.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring a website so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude can read, understand, and cite your business when users ask questions in your industry. Where traditional SEO competes for a blue link, AEO competes to be the answer the AI gives before the user clicks anything.
Do I need a Google Business Profile?
Yes. A claimed and verified Google Business Profile is one of the strongest signals AI engines use to confirm a business is real and located where it claims to be. We set up or audit GBP as part of every website build and align the listing's name, address, phone, hours, service categories, and description with the website so the two sources reinforce each other instead of conflicting.
How is this different from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO targets keyword rankings on Google's search results page. AEO targets citation inside the answers AI tools generate. The two overlap (both reward fast, crawlable, well structured pages) but AEO adds requirements traditional SEO ignores: structured data on every page, FAQ content in semantic HTML, entity verification across directories, and content written for natural language questions instead of keyword phrases.
What does ongoing monitoring include?
We track how your business is being cited (or not) inside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. We watch Google Business Profile performance in local search. We refine FAQ content based on the questions prospects are actually asking. We update structured data as the business evolves (new services, new locations, new hours). AI search is not static, so a site that gets cited today can fade in months without active maintenance.
