What did OpenAI announce?
On October 14, OpenAI notified developers that GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, GPT-4.1, and GPT-4.1 mini will be removed from its API on January 14, 2027 (OpenAI). Custom fine-tuned versions of those models shut down the same day, and OpenAI recommends moving to its newer GPT-6 Luna model.
It isn’t the only notice. On October 1, OpenAI also scheduled GPT-5.1, GPT-5.4 Nano, and GPT-5.3-Codex for removal on April 1, 2027 (OpenAI).
Why does this matter for a small business?
These notices cover OpenAI’s API, the behind-the-scenes connection that developers, website plugins, and automation platforms use to plug AI into other software. It’s not about the ChatGPT app you type into. It’s about the quiet tools working in the background.
The tricky part is that many owners don’t know which model their tools use. A freelancer set it up, a plugin picked it, or it was the default on a setup screen.
