How fast are AI costs dropping?
Three announcements in a single week tell the story:
- Top-tier chat is now free. OpenAI rolled GPT-6 out to every ChatGPT plan, including Free and Go users starting October 8. Paid plans get GPT-6 Sol; free plans get GPT-6 Luna.
- Everyday automation costs pennies. Anthropic launched Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7 at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Anthropic says it costs around 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5. It is built for high-volume work like summaries, classification, and live customer support.
- Images cost half as much. Google’s new Nano Banana 2.1 image model cuts prices roughly in half. The Decoder reports a 1K image now costs 3.36 cents, down from 6.70 cents.
Why does this matter to a small business?
When the AI itself is free or close to it, the price tag stops being the decision. The questions that matter now are different. Which jobs in your business should AI handle? What data can it see, and what should it never touch? Who checks its work before it reaches a customer? Does your team actually know how to use it?
