But Visibility Is Not Traffic. Google says its established SEO fundamentals still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. But a citation inside an AI answer does not guarantee a website visit, much less a qualified lead or a sale. By **Brian Moser** ยท BlueShore.AI SEO still matters. Google says the [same SEO fundamentals used for traditional search also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). A page still needs to be indexed, eligible to appear in Google Search, technically accessible, useful, and clear. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations required to appear in its AI features. That means search rankings and AI visibility overlap. They are not two completely separate systems, at least within Google. ## AI Citations Do Not Guarantee Traffic Appearing in an AI answer can improve awareness and authority. It does not guarantee that someone will visit your website. [Pew Research Center analyzed the March 2025 browsing activity of 900 U.S. adults](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/). Users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% of visits without one. They clicked a source cited inside the AI summary on only 1% of visits. A citation is valuable, but it is not the same thing as a click. A click is not the same thing as a qualified lead. And a qualified lead is not the same thing as a sale. ## Be Careful With Claims About Growth You will sometimes hear that the sites growing fastest are the ones capturing both traditional search rankings and AI citations. Visibility across both channels is a sensible goal, but that statement needs evidence before it can be treated as a growth claim. Ranking in search and appearing in AI answers establish visibility. They do not, by themselves, establish growth in visits, leads, or sales. Those outcomes have to be measured separately. ## Keep SEO as the Foundation The practical strategy is not SEO versus [Answer Engine Optimization](https://blueshore.ai/answer-engine-optimization/) or [Generative Engine Optimization](https://blueshore.ai/generative-engine-optimization/). It is SEO first, with AEO and GEO layered on top. Keep the technical foundation strong. Publish useful content that directly answers the questions buyers ask. Make your business easy for search engines and AI systems to understand. Build credible mentions and citations beyond your own website. Then measure the outcomes that matter: qualified leads and sales alongside rankings, clicks, and AI citations. The goal is not merely to appear in more places. The goal is to be found by the right people and turn that visibility into business.
